Question : Amendment in Motor Vehicle Act

(a) the details of road accidents including people killed/injured on various national State highways and other roads during the last three years and the current year, state-wise;

(b) whether the Government has any plan to introduce a National Accident Relief Policy for prompt relief and free trauma care;

(c) if so, the details thereof along with the details of quantum of compensation paid to the victims of road traffic accidents during the last three years and the current year;

(d) whether the Government proposes to amend Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 in view of road accidents; and

(e) if so, the details thereof along with the action taken by the Government in this regard?

(a) States/ UT wise details of number of road accidents, persons killed and injured on National Highways(including Expressways), State Highways and other roads for the last three calendar years and current year (2010 to 2013) are annexed.

(b) to (e) Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has drafted a new Road Transport and Safety Bill to replace the Motor Vehicle Act, 1988. Under the new Bill, provisions have been made for introducing the prompt relief to road accident victims. The Road Transport and Safety Bill envisages inter-alia to utilize technological intervention and information technology based systems to ensure efficient and safe transport systems in the country.
