(a) whether the Government has categorised the cities on the basis of the population and availability of basic public facilities; and
(b) if so, the number of categories made for urban areas in the country, the cities covered therein and the criteria followed in this regard?

& (b) : The census of India classifies towns & cities in terms of population size.
The Census of India classifies cities in the following categories:
Class-I : population 1 lakh and above Class-II: population 50,000 - 99,999 Class-III: population 20,000 - 49.999 Class-IV: population 10,000 - 19,999 Class-V : population 5,000 - 9,999 Class-VI: population below 5,000
