& (b) : The census of India classifies towns & cities in terms of population size.
The Census of India classifies cities in the following categories:
Class-I : population 1 lakh and above
Class-II: population 50,000 - 99,999
Class-III: population 20,000 - 49.999
Class-IV: population 10,000 - 19,999
Class-V : population 5,000 - 9,999
Class-VI: population below 5,000
Under Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission, 3 categories of cities have been
identified as per norms/criteria mentioned as under:

A Cities/UAs with 4 million plus population as 07 per 2001 Census
B Cities/UAs with 1 million plus population but 28 less than 4 million as per 2001 Census
C Selected Cities/UAs (State capitals and other 30 Cities/UAs of religious/historic and touristic importance) Total 65
