THE MINISTER OF STATE IN THE MINISTRY OF MINES AND MINERALS
( SMT. RITA VERMA )
(a) to (c) : Mining activity in the country has historically been undertaken both, by public sector as well as private sector companies. The applications for grant of mining leases both from the private sector and public sector are continuously received and processed by the State Governments. Mining Leases are granted by the State Governments as per provisions of Mines and Minerals ( Development and Regulation ) Act, 1957 and Rules made thereunder. Since the grant of mining leases is under the domain of State Governments, the information regarding the names of individual mines etc is not centrally maintained. However, as per the information furnished by Indian Bureau of Mines, a subordinate office of the Deptt. of Mines, during 1998-99, the number of mining leases with private sector was 8254, out of which, 2320 were operating mines. The State-wise details are given in Annexure.
Annexure referred to in reply to Lok Sabha Unstarred Question No. 7263 listed for 12.5.2000 asked by Shri Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi regarding Leasing Out of Mines to Private Sector.
