Question : EQUAL OPPORTUNITIES TO MEN AND WOMEN SPORTSPERSONS



(a) whether any discrimination exists between men and women sportspersons;

(b) if so, the details thereof and the reasons therefor;

(c) the details of demands of women hockey players and other sportswomen still pending with the Government; and

(d) the steps being taken to provide equal opportunities and packages for men and women sportspersons in the country?

(a) There is no discrimination on the basis of gender, caste or creed in sports.

(b) Does not arise.

(c) The primarily responsibility for the promotion of a sport rests with the concerned recognized National Sports Federation (NSF). Government supplements the efforts of the NSF by providing financial assistance to the NSFs for procurement of equipment and consumables, holding national/international sports events in India, participation of sportspersons/teams in international sports events abroad, training/coaching of national level sportspersons/teams through Indian and foreign coaches, as per agreed Long Term Development Plans (LTDPs) with the NSFs. No demand from any sports women including hockey players has either been received or pending with the Government.
