Question : PM Poshan Scheme

(a) whether the Government proposes to introduce PM Poshan scheme to provide midday
meal to students of Government and Government aided schools;
(b) if so, the details thereof;
(c) whether the said scheme will be different from the existing mid-day meal scheme;
(d) if so, the purpose of carrying out the change;
(e) the share of the Centre and the States in this scheme; and
(f) the steps proposed to be taken by the Government for the implementation of the new
scheme?

(a) to (f): Central Government has approved the Centrally Sponsored Scheme ‘Pradhan
Mantri Poshan Shakti Nirman (PM POSHAN)’ earlier known as ‘National
Programme for Mid-Day Meal in Schools’ for providing one hot cooked meal in
Government and Government – aided Schools.
The Government has approved provision of hot cooked meal to children of
Balvatika (before class I) also, in addition to the children of classes I to VIII. The
Government approved continuation of the Scheme for the five year period 2021-22
to 2025-26 with the financial outlay of ? 54061.73 crores from the Central
Government and ? 31733.17 crore from State Government & Union Territory
Administrations. Central Government will also bear additional cost of about ? 45000
crore on foodgrains through subsidy.
The scheme is implemented in partnership with the States and Union Territory
Administrations. The overall responsibility for providing cooked and nutritious midday
meal to the eligible children lies with the State Governments and Union
Territory Administrations.
