Question : EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES



(a) the number of employment opportunities targeted to be generated during the 12th Five Year Plan, State/UT-wise and sector-wise including information technology financial services, management consulting, etc., both in the rural and urban areas of the country;

(b) the progress made in this regard at present, State/UT-wise; and

(c) the various steps taken by the Government for employment generation in the country particularly in urban and rural areas?

(a) to (c): During the 12th Five Year Plan (2012-17), 5 crore non-farm employment opportunities are proposed to be created and atleast equivalent number of people would be provided skill certification. The focus is on more productive and quality (organized and self employed) employment in the manufacturing and services sectors. By 2016-17, twelfth plan scenario projects that there will be 22.6 crore people in farm i.e. in agriculture sectors and 27.64 crore engaged in non-farm sector respectively.

The State/UT-wise and rural-urban break up is not maintained centrally. However, as informed by National Skill Development Agency, the Ministry-wise performance is at Annex-I.

To provide employment in the country particularly in urban and rural areas, Government of India is implementing various public employment generation schemes like Prime Minister’s Employment Generation Programme (PMEGP) run by Ministry of Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises, Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGA), Pt. Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Grameen Kaushalya Yojana (DDU-GKY) scheme run by Ministry of Rural Development and National Urban Livelihoods Mission (NULM) run by Ministry of Housing & Urban Poverty Alleviation.
