Question : Data on Suicides and Accidental Deaths

(a) whether the annual report published by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) recently on accidental deaths and suicides does not include data compiled under caste and religion;

(b) if so, the reasons for not disclosing data of suicides by caste and religion wise;

(c) whether the NCRB has been functioning on the directives of the Government and deliberately hiding the factual figures on deaths and suicides; and

(d) if so, the steps taken by the Government to bring transparency in the functioning of the NCRB?

(a) & (b) Yes. National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) started collecting data on suicides under classification of SC, ST, OBC & others and religion wise using the revised proforma of “Accidental Deaths and Suicides in India” since 2014. However, some inconsistencies were observed in data provided by some States/UTs and therefore the Bureau has not published the data.

(c) NCRB is an attached office of MHA. The total data on suicides are being published by NCRB as provided by States/UTs. However data under classification of SC, ST, OBC & others and religion wise was not published for reasons stated above.
(d) The data collected by the NCRB has been made available at its website http://ncrb.gov.in for the public at large. Data of “Crime in India” from 1967 to 2015 and “Accidental Deaths and Suicides in India” from 1998 to 2015 is available on the website of NCRB.
