(a) Archaeological Survey of India identifies new places/sites including monuments (religious, non-religious and others) through various means such as village to village survey through its field offices. In this process in the year 2015-16 in all 1820 villages were surveyed out of which 822 have revealed remains of archaeological significance including 386 places of worship. A State-wise abstract indicating places of worship is at Annexure– I.
(b) Our country has in-numerable number of places of worship all over the country, out of which a few of them have been declared protected. Archaeological Survey of India protects only such monuments which meet the criteria specified under Section 2 of Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act, 1958.
(c) In addition to conservation of protected monuments, Archaeological Survey of India takes up conservation of religious places, not protected by Archaeological Survey of India, as a Special work. Most of the religious places are visited by large number of devotees, scholars besides enthusiast and as such they are places of tourist interest as well. However, there is no provision to declare such places as of tourist interest under the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act, 1958.
(d) The expenditure incurred on conservation, preservation and restoration of centrally protected monuments (including temples and sites) during the last three years and provisions made for this year is at Annexure –II. Further, expenditure incurred on conservation, preservation and restoration of non-protected monuments/religious places is at Annexure-III.
