Question : Tap Water to Rural Households

(a) whether 19 crore rural households are to get tap water by 2024 under Jal Jeevan Mission and if so, the details thereof;
(b) whether the said Mission has achieved 32.2 percent coverage since its launch in August, 2019;
(c) whether it is true that almost one lakh new connections are getting added on daily basis;
(d) whether it is also a fact that out of a total of 731 districts, 256 districts and 1,592 blocks have been classified as water stressed or drought prone; and
(e) if so, the details thereof, State-wise?

(a) to (c) Government of India in partnership with States, is implementing Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) – Har Ghar Jal, to provide tap water connection to every rural household of the country by 2024. At the time of announcement of Jal Jeevan Mission on 15th August, 2019, about 3.23 Crore rural households were reported to have tap water connections. Implementation of Jal Jeevan started with the release of Operational Guidelines on 25th December, 2019. As of date, out of 19.18 Crore rural households across the country, 6.64 Crore (34.63%) households are reported to have potable tap water supply. Recent trend shows that on an average, daily one lakh households are reported to have been given tap water connections. (d) & (e) The dynamic ground water resources of the country are being periodically assessed jointly by Central Ground Water Board (CGWB) and State Governments. As per the periodical assessment carried out in 2017, ‘Over-exploited’ and ‘Critical’ areas fall in 1,592 blocks of 257 districts across the country. State-wise details are annexed.
