(a) whether the demand and production level of steel has been assessed for the next decade and if so, the details thereof along with the action plan initiated in this regard; and
(b) the steps taken/being taken by the Government to reduce the dependence on steel scrap imports in the country?

(a) As per the National Steel Policy, 2017, the expected crude steel demand/production in the country is likely to be 255 MTPA and total domestic finished steel demand/production would be 230 MTPA by 2030-31. The Government has notified National Steel Policy, 2017 with a view to encourage long term growth of domestic steel sector.
(b) The Steel Scrap Recycling Policy notified by Ministry of Steel in Gazette of India on 07.11.2019 provides a framework to facilitate and promote establishment of scrapping centres for scientific processing & recycling of ferrous scrap generated from various sources in an organized and environment friendly manner to give boost to import substitution of Steel Scrap.
