Question : Welfare Scheme for Theatre Artists

(a) the schemes including welfare schemes running for theatre and Artists related to theatrics in the country;

(b) the State/UT-wise details of the financial assistance provided to these Artists under such schemes during the last three years and the current year, year– wise; and

(c) the steps taken/proposed to be taken by the Government for the revival of conventional theatres in the country?

(a) & (b) Ministry of Culture administers various Schemes for providing financial assistance to artists of different cultural fields including inter-alia the artists related to theatrics, given as under

i) Repertory grant.
ii) Scheme for pension and Medical Aid to Artistes.
iii) Cultural Function Production Grant Scheme.
iv) Scholarship & Fellowship.

All Schemes are Central Sector Schemes and no financial assistance is routed through States/UTs. However, the details of financial assistance provided to artists under the aforesaid Schemes during the last three years are Annexed.

(c) National School of Drama (NSD), an autonomous organization under Ministry of Culture organizes various theatre festival for revival of theatre in the country (i) International Theatre Festival of India (Bharat Rang Mahotsav) in which opportunity is provided to theatre groups to participate. Theatre groups participating in these festivals include various forms such as contemporary, classical, folk based, modern etc. Besides other allied activities like director meet, ambience performance, seminars, theatre forums, master classes, living legends, etc, (ii) National Theatre Festival for Children (Jashnebachpan & Bal Sangam), a mela of children practicing traditional performing arts from tribal/rural areas of country, (iii) Indian Classical Theatre Festivals where theatre in Indian classical forms are invited to participate in the festival by NSD. So far NSD has organized Classical Theatre Festival in Varanasi, Udaipur, Aurangabad, Goa, Indore, Ujjain & Sangli in which classical theatre performances from different parts of the country were invited to perform in each of the festival venue and (iv) Adirang Mahotsav is a National Tribal Festival of Theatre, Dance, Music, Crafts & Seminars on tribal theme organized by NSD. About 30 such festivals at Shantiniketan, Raipur, Khairagarh, Port Blair, Surat, Nasik, Goa, Kendujhar, Chaibasa, Tinsukiya, Mumbai & Daman with more than 17000 tribal artists/craftsmen have already been organized.
