Question : DEATHS DUE TO MALARIA



(a) whether a large number of persons have died due to Malaria in the backward areas of Sarang-garh in Madhya Pradesh during November, 1999;

(b) if so, the details thereof;

(c) the funds provided for eradication of Malaria during each of the last three years;

(d) whether the funds have been utilised properly;

(e) if so, the reasons for occurring of such incidents and the steps being taken by the Government in this regard;

(f) whether the Government propose to plan to provide financial relief to the families of the deceased; (g) if so, the details thereof; and (h) if not, the reasons therefor?

(a) No, Sir.

(b) Does not arise.

(c)&(d): Central Government provides material assistance to the Government of Madhya Pradesh for control of malaria based on demand and as per technical requirment. The assistance provided during the last three years under National Anti Malaria Programme is as under :-

It has been confirmed by the State Government that the material assistance provided by the Central Government has been utilised.

(e) The steps taken to control malaria include:- Intenzsification of vector control measures through prioritization of areas for selective spray with appropriate insecticides and alternative and integrated vector control methods. Introduction of newer insecticides like Synthetic Pyrethorids for selective use as per technical requirements. Intensification of Information Education and Communciation (IEC) activities for public awareness and community participation. Institutional and management capacity building, manpower development through intensive re-orientation programme at all levels and efficient Management Information System (MIS). Implementation of an Enhanced Malaria Control Project (EMCP) with World Bank support under the National Anti Malaria Programme (NAMP) since September, 1997. This project covers 100 predominantly tribal district of 7 peninsular States, including 25 districts of Madhya Pradesh, and 19 cities/towns including Bhopal in Madhya Pradesh having high endemicity of malaira for intensified Malaria Control activities by way of additional inputs through a mix of interventions.
