Question : BIRD HIT-INCIDENT



(a) whether an incident of bird hit with an aeroplane occurred in Delhi in May, 2001;

(b) if so, the Airlines to which it belonged to and the losses suffered therefrom;

(c) the number of incidents of bird hit occurred during the last three years and losses incurred therefrom; and

(d) the concrete steps taken by the Government to avoid such incidents in the future?

THE MINISTER OF CIVIL AVIATION (SHRI SHARAD YADAV)

(a) Yes, Sir. Three incidents of bird hit took place involving Indian civil registered aircraft in Delhi during the month of May, 2001.

(b) Two aircraft of Air India and one of Indian Airlines were involved. Air India incurred a loss of Rs.49,000/- in these two incidents while Indian Airlines did not incur any loss as there was no damage to the aircraft.

(c) Bird strikes data for the last three years for civil aircraft at all airports in the country, is as follows:

During the last three years i.e. from 1998 to 2000, the total loss to Air India and Indian Airlines due to bird hit incidents is Rs.18.32 crores.


(d) Surveys around the airfields are carried out and appropriate measures are taken by the Airfield Environment Management Committee to check the sources of bird attraction. Besides, continuous efforts are made for scaring the birds and to remove the sources of bird attraction inside the airfields.
