Question : STORAGE CAPACITY OF RESERVOIRS



(a) whether the water level in major reservoirs has decreased this year in comparison to last three years;

(b) if so, the comparative data of water level of each of the reservoirs during the last three years and the current year, year wise and reservoir-wise;

(c) the reasons for gradual decline in water level in the reservoirs; and

(d) the steps taken/proposed to be taken by the Government in this regard?

(a) Central Water Commission is monitoring the live storage position of 81 reservoirs of the country. The status of total live storage built up in these 81 reservoirs as on 22.07.2010 and for the corresponding period during the last three years is given below:

(b) The reservoir wise details of the water level and live storage built up in 81 reservoirs monitored by CWC during the current year and last three years is given at Annexure.

(c) The storage built up in the reservoirs at any point of time depends upon quantity of rainfall received in their respective catchment as well as withdrawals from the reservoirs.

(d) Water being a state subject, the operation and regulation of water in dams/reservoirs is done by the respective project authority/State Government as per their requirements.
