Question : Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan and Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalayas

(a) whether the Government has sanctioned a large number of Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalayas (KGBVs) to be opened in the country under the Centrally Sponsored Scheme with an aim to reduce educational backwardness;

(b) if so, the number of present functional KGBVs along with newly sanctioned KGBVs, State-wise and district-wise including Andhra Pradesh;

(c) the number of new KGBVs sanctioned for Assam especially for districts Dhubri, Goalpara, South Salmara and Mankachar;

(d) the time frame by when above KGBVs are likely to be made functional; and

(e) the number of schools upgraded from Class 6-8 to Class 6-12 as is envisaged under the Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan ?

(a) & (b): Under Samagra Shiksha, a centrally sponsored scheme of Department of School Education & Literacy, Ministry of Education, Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalayas (KGBVs) from classes VI to XII have been sanctioned in Educationally Backward Blocks (EBBs) to promote education of girls belonging to disadvantaged groups such as SC, ST, OBC, Minority and Below Poverty Line (BPL). As on 13.07.2022, a total of 4982 KGBVs are operational in the country. The State/UT-wise list of operational KGBVs is at Annexure-I. Further, 31 new KGBVs have been sanctioned in the year 2022-23. The State/UT-wise and district-wise list of new KGBVs sanctioned in 2022-23 is at Annexure-II.


(c) & (d): No new KGBVs have been sanctioned for the State of Assam in the year 2022-23. However, a total of 126 KGBVs are operational in Assam of which 13 KGBVs are in Dhubri, 07 in Goalpara and 03 in South Salmara and Mankachar.

(e): The task of up-gradation of the KGBVs was started in the year 2018-19 and till the year 2022-23, a total of 2010 KGBVs have been approved for up-gradation to Type-III (class 6-12).
