Question : Functional Coal Mines

(a) the quantity of coal extracted from the functional coal mines, State-wise, including Tamil Nadu, during the last six years and the details of revenue earned by the Government from these mines;
(b) whether the Government proposes to revive the non-functional mines and if so, the details thereof; and
(c) whether the Directorate General of Mines Safety (DGMS) banned the process of vertical extraction of coal across the country and if so, the details thereof?

(a): State-wise coal production from functional coal mines during last six years (2013-14 to 2018-19) are given below.

There is no coal mine in Tamil Nadu but there are lignite mines. Year-wise production of lignite in Tamil Nadu is as follows:

(b): 03 non-functional mines (namely Kustore, Hurriladih & Burrahgarh of Bharat Coking Coal Limited (BCCL) in the state of Jharkhand are proposed to be revived.

(c): There is no ban on the process of vertical extraction of coal across the country by the Directorate General of Mines Safety (DGMS). However, provisions of the Coal Mines Regulation, 2017 have to be followed while extracting coal.
