Question : Trible Population in Maharashtra

(a) whether any research/study has been conducted by the Government to know the status of the tribal population and if so, the details thereof, State-wise;
(b) whether the tribal population is decreasing in Maharashtra and if so, the reason therefor; and

(c) the efforts being made to increase the population of tribals and to provide them employment in the area itself and the details thereof?

Answer given by the minister

(a): Status of the Scheduled Tribe (ST) population is ascertained through the data available from Census, Management Information Systems, Large Scale Sample Surveys conducted by different Ministries/ Departments of Government. A statement showing State-wise details of some indicators in respect of Scheduled Tribes is given at Annexure.
(b) & (c): As per Census, 2011 the population of Scheduled Tribes (STs) in the State of Maharashtra has increased about 23% in comparison to Census, 2001. Further, Tribal Research Institutes (TRI), Government of Maharashtra has been asked to undertake a study on population of certain ST communities in the State.
The schemes/programmes namely “Special Central Assistance to Tribal Sub-Scheme (SCA to TSS)”, “Grant-in-aid under Article 275(1) of the Constitution” and “Development of Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs)” administered by the Ministry of Tribal Affairs inter-alia, supports livelihood and employment generation for tribal population.
Besides, Ministry of Tribal Affairs, through TRIFED is implementing the following programmes/Schemes which specifically cater to the livelihood needs of the tribal population:
1. Mechanism for Marketing of Minor Forest Produce (MFP) through Minimum Support Price (MSP) and Development of Value Chain for MFP.
2. Institutional Support for Development & Marketing of Tribal Products/Produce.
Further, National Scheduled Tribes Finance and Development Corporation (NSTFDC) an apex organisation of the Ministry of Tribal Affairs provides financial assistance for income generation activities and marketing support assistance for economic upliftment of Scheduled Tribes.




Apart from above, the schemes/programmes of other Central Ministries / Departments having provision for livelihood and employment generation include the following:

• Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS)
• Deendayal Antodaya Yojana-National Rural Livelihood Mission (DAY-NRLM)
• Aatmanirbhar Bharat Rozgar Yojana (ABRY)
• Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Yojana (PMGKY)
• Prime Minister’s Employment Generation Programme (PMEGP)
• Deendayal Antodaya Yojana-National Urban Livelihoods Mission (DAY-NULM)
• Pradhan Mantri Mudra Yojana (PMMY)
