Question : HYDRO ELECTRIC POWER PROJECTS



(a) whether the Government have given consent under the provisions of Electricity (Supply) Act, 1948 to NHPC to establish, operate and maintain the Nimmo-Bazgo Hydel-Electric Project and take up the survey and investigation of the same;

(b) whether the Government have also asked the NHPC to take up the Chutak Hydel Project in Kargil after getting a detailed project report from the State; and

(c) if so, the latest position about these two projects?

THE MINISTER OF STATE IN THE MINISTRY OF POWER ( SHRIMATI JAYAWANTI MEHTA )

(a) to (c): Yes, Sir. A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed on July 20, 2000 between Ministry of Power, Government of India and Government of Jammu and Kashnir for execution of seven Hydro-electric projects including Nimmo Bazgo (30 MW) and Chutak (18 MW) hydroelectric projects in J&K. In March, 2000 a copy of Detailed Project Report (DPR) of Nimmo Bazgo Project was obtained from J&K Government. To consider various aspects of project design, geology and construction including logistic for preparation of revised Detailed Project Report, a team of National Hydro-electric Power Corporation (NHPC) officers visited project site and recommended additional investigation works such as establishment of gauge and discharge site, exploratory drifts for under ground power house, additional drill holes at barrage axis with permeability tests and review of manpower planning, construction equipment planning and construction methodology etc.

Regarding Chutak Hydro-electric project, NHPC has requested the Principle Secretary, Power Development Department, Govt. of J&K to provide one copy of the Detailed Project Report of the project.
