Question : Terrorist Attack at Air Force Station Pathankot

(a) whether a group of terrorists attacked the Air Force Station Pathankot recently;


(b) if so, the details thereof including the number of defence personnel killed / injured in the said attack along with the compensation paid to the killed / injured personnel;


(c) whether the Government has conducted any inquiry in this regard, if so, the details and the outcome thereof;


(d) whether the Government has deployed the National Security Guards to deal with the said attack and kept the Army at bay, if so, the details thereof and the reasons therefor; and


(e) the corrective steps taken / proposed to be taken by the Government to prevent recurrence such incidents in the country?

MINISTER OF DEFENCE (SHRI MANOHAR PARRIKAR)


(a) & (b): A group of terrorist attacked the Air Force base, Pathankot, Punjab in the intervening night of 1.1.2016 and 2.1.2016. The terrorists were successfully prevented from damaging the strategic assets of Indian Air Force (IAF) and were neutralised by the Indian security forces. In the said terror attack, 7 defence personnel lost their lives and 25 defence personnel were injured. Compensation for loss of lives is paid as per extant Government orders / instructions.

(c) The Central Government has directed the National Investigation Agency (NIA) to take up the investigation of the cases relating to the terrorist attack on the Air Force base at Pathankot. The investigation is not yet complete.

(d) A joint operation by the Army, Air Force and National Security Guard (NSG) was conducted to neutralize the said terrorist attack.

(e) The Government has constituted a Committee under the chairmanship of a former Vice Chief of Army Staff to inter-alia suggest measures to strengthen security of various military establishments across the country.
