Question : Pharma Sector



Will the Minister of CHEMICALS AND FERTILIZERS be pleased to state:

(a) whether it is true that India''s pharma sector is one of the largest sector in the world and is spreading rapidly;

(b) if so, the details thereof;

(c) whether the industry is finding difficult to get things done in view of various divisions of pharma sector located under various Ministries;

(d) if so, whether there is a need to have a separate Ministry for pharmaceutical sector; and

(e) if so, the reasons for delay in setting up of a separate Ministry for the aforesaid purpose?

(a) & (b): Yes, Madam. The Indian Pharmaceutical Industry is witnessing a robust growth. In the beginning of 11th Plan in 2007 it stood at approximately Rs. 71000 crores which has now risen to approximately Rs. 2,00,000 crores as per data of Pharmatrac and Pharmexcil upto 2015-16.
(c): The government makes every endeavor to see that the manufacturers do not face any difficulty and wherever required, the Inter-Ministerial Consultations are done to expedite the matter.
(d) & (e): The creation of separate Ministry for Pharmaceuticals is a matter to be considered keeping in view the mandate of all the Central Government Ministries/Departments dealing with the sector. At present there is no such proposal before the government.
