Question : Shortage of Medical Colleges

Will the Minister of HEALTH AND FAMILY WELFARE be pleased to state:

(a) the number of MBBS seats in the Government medical colleges across the country, State/UT-wise including Punjab and Gujarat;

(b) the details of the proposals received by the Government for setting up of medical colleges across the country during the last three years and the current year, location, State/UT-wise including West Bengal along with the status thereon;

(c) whether Government/MCI has reduced/proposes to reduce the number of seats in medical colleges throughout the country, if so, the details thereof and the reasons therefor;

(d) whether any study has been conducted to assess the availability/ shortage of medical colleges in the country and the quality of medical education being imparted; and

(e) if so, the details and outcome/ findings of the study thereof and the steps taken/proposed to be taken by the Government to scale up the availability of medical colleges and quality of medical education in the country?

(c): No.
(d) & (e): No. Under the Centrally Sponsored Scheme for ‘Establishment of New Medical Colleges attached with district/referral hospitals’, 58 districts have been identified in 20 States/UTs in under served areas. A common entrance test viz. National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) has been introduced to ensure better quality of medical education.
