Question : Financial Assistance for Drinking Water Projects

(a) whether the Government has allocated any funds for Tamil Nadu for carrying out drinking water supply projects across the State keeping in view of the backdrop of perennial water shortage problem and if so, the details thereof;
(b) whether the Government has received any request from Tamil Nadu in June, 2019 for the allocation of 5400 crore rupees for drinking water projects across the State;
(c) if so, whether the Government has decided to disburse any funds and if so, the details thereof; and
(d) the total amount of central funds given to the State of Tamil Nadu for enhancing the capacity of drinking water during each of the last five years?

(a to c) Government of Tamil Nadu requested for financial assistance inter alia seeking ?5,398 Crore as Central assistance. Meanwhile, Government of India has launched Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) with an outlay of Rs. 3.60 lakh Crore with Central share of Rs. 2.08 lakh Crore, to provide Functional Household Tap Connection (FHTC) to every rural household by 2024. Under JJM, funds are allocated to the States as per approved criteria and ?302.89 Crore, out of which ?151.45 Crore has been released as first instalment during 2019-20 for carrying out drinking water supply projects across the state. Moreover, once the State utilizes the available funds, it can seek 2nd instalment and after its utilization and reporting performance, the State can also ask for additional fund to be provided based on functionality assessment of household tap connections.
(d) The total amount of central funds given to the State of Tamil Nadu under erstwhile National Rural Drinking Water Programme (now JJM) for rural water supply during the last five years is as under:
