Question : Centres for Endangered Languages


(a) whether the University Grants Commission is providing financial assistance for creation of Centres for Endangered Languages in the Central and State Universities;
(b) if so, the details thereof;
(c) the total number of such Centres set up for preservation and revitalisation of Endangered Languages in various Central and State Universities in the country during the last five years; and
(d) the details of funds allocated and spent for the said purpose during the above period?

STATEMENT AS REFERRED TO IN REPLY TO PARTS (a) to (d) OF LOK SABHA STARRED QUESTION NO.186 FOR 02.12.2019 ASKED BY SHRI NALIN KUMAR KATEEL AND SHRI D.K. SURESH, HON’BLE MEMBERS OF PARLIAMENT REGARDING CENTRES FOR ENDANGERED LANGUAGES.

(a) & (b): Yes, Sir. Based on the recommendations of an Expert Committee constituted by the University Grants Commission (UGC) for studying the issues pertaining to preservation and promotion of Endangered Languages, a scheme for Promotion of Endangered Languages in State Universities and Establishment of Centres for Endangered Languages in Central Universities has been launched.

To ensure the preservation of endangered languages, the identified universities have been grouped together into separate clusters viz. North-Eastern Languages, Tribal Languages, Numeric and Coastal Languages and theoretical work of endangerment.

(c) & (d): The details of amounts allocated and released for Centres for Endangered Languages to the 9 Central Universities and under Preservation and Promotion of Endangered Languages to the 7 State Universities are enclosed at Annexure.
