Question : TARGETS FOR OPENING OF POST OFFICES

(a) whether any target had been fixed to open new post offices and branch post offices in West Bengal and Gujarat during the last two years;

(b) if so, the details of the targets achieved in this regard, district-wise;

(c) whether all the targets have been achieved;

(d) if not, the reasons therefor; and

(e) the remedial action taken thereon?

(a)to(e) In 2003-04 West Bengal was given target for opening of 6 Extra Departmental Branch Post Offices, which was fully achieved.

Gujarat was given a target for opening of 10 Extra Departmental Branch Post Offices and one Departmental Sub Post Office in the same year, out of which 9 Extra Departmental Branch Post Offices and one Departmental Sub Post Office were opened. One Extra Departmental Branch Post Office could not be opened as no proposal for opening of Extra Departmental Branch Post Office in Tribal area was found justified as per the Departmental norms for opening Post Offices.

In 2004-05 no targets were given under Plan for any circle. However, where proposals were found to be justified, post offices were opened by relocation of post offices which are located at a lesser distance than the prescribed norm. Accordingly, two Departmental Sub Post Offices in West Bengal and 03 Extra Departmental Branch Post Offices and 05 Departmental Sub Post Offices in Gujarat have been opened during the year. This approach is in consonance with the policy directives in the 10th Plan.

The district-wise details of post Offices opened in West Bengal and Gujarat during the year 2003-04 and 2004-05 are given in Annexure I and II
