Question : INSURANCE OF POOR PEOPLE



(a) whether the poor people are given insurance cover only in case of fire breaking out at their residences;

(b) if so, the details thereof;

(c) whether the Government propose to formulate any scheme to provide insurance cover to the poor people for their homes destroyed by natural calamities like flood, earthquakes and cyclones;

(d) if so, the details thereof; and

(e) if not, the reasons therefor?

(a),(b)&(c): Insurance covers are available not only for fire but also for various other natural calamities, such as, earthquake, cyclone, flood, hurricane, landslide, etc. with the four public sector general insurance companies viz.
(i) National Insurance Co. Ltd.,
(ii) New India Assurance Co. Ltd.,
(iii) Oriental Insurance Co. Ltd. and
(iv) United India Insurance Co. Ltd. These covers can be purchased from these companies by paying the requisite premium.
