Question : REGULATORY BODY FOR ROAD TRANSPORT SECTOR



(a) whether the Government proposes to set up a regulatory body in the Road Transport Sector;

(b) if so, the objectives and the details of the proposals thereof alongwith its present status;

(c) whether some of the State Road Transport Corporations (SRTCs) have suffered huge losses;

(d) if so, the details thereof alongwith the reasons therefor, State-wise; and

(e) the extent to which the proposed regulatory body is likely to improve the financial health of the SRTCs?

(a) No, Madam.

(b) Question does not arise.

(c) As per available information, 27 State Road Transport Undertakings have suffered losses during the financial year 2010-2011.

(d) The details of losses incurred by State Road Transport Undertakings is annexed. Some of the main reasons for making losses by State Road Transport Undertakings are – liability to pay huge amount of motor vehicle taxes imposed by the respective State Governments, high incidence of Central / States’ duties on Public Passenger Transport Vehicles, high incidence of indirect taxes on diesel, concessions on fare to various categories and non-revision of fare in line with increase in cost of fuel, personnel and other costs.

(e) In view of reply to (a) & (b), question does not arise.
