Question : CENSUS



(a) whether the Government propose to form a commission/statutory body to carry out census which is due in next year;

(b) if so, the target date and time to complete the census work; and

(c) the expenditure likely to be incurred, State-wise?

(a): The Central Government has appointed the Census Commissioner, India for the 2001 Census under the Census Act, 1948, vide the Ministry of Home Affairs Notification S.O.671(E), dated the 16th August, 1999.

(b): The population enumeration is scheduled for 9th -28th February, 2001. The reference date is 1st March, 2001 except in the State of Jammu & Kashmir. In the case of Jammu & Kashmir, the reference date would be 1st October, 2000.

(c): The estimated expenditure for conducting the field operations of the 2001 Census will be approximately Rs. 678 crores. State-wise break-up of this expenditure is not readily available.
