Question : Irrigation Facilities for Farmers

(a) whether the Government is contemplating to provide irrigation facility to all the farmers and has formulated any national level irrigation policy/scheme to provide facilities for irrigation of every agricultural field in the country;
(b) if so, the details thereof and the quantum of funds likely to be spent in the first phase thereunder in each State/UT;
(c) the extent of agricultural land likely to be irrigated under the same, State/ UT-wise;
(d) the likely projection of storage capacity of all water bodies viz. canals, ponds, wells etc. to be increased as a result of the same; and
(e) the further steps to be taken to enhance irrigation facilities for farmers?

(a) & (b) Yes, Madam. The Government has introduced a new scheme namely Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchai Yojana (PMKSY) with the objective of providing irrigation to each field and more crops per drop. In the first phase, feasible expenditure of PMKSY are as follows:

(c) & (d) The extent of agriculture land which is likely to be irrigated, likely projection of storage capacity on water bodies viz. Canals, ponds, wells etc. will be reflected in the District Irrigation Plan and State Irrigation Plan.
(e) State Governments undertake several measures for development and management of water resources in the States which, inter-alia, include extension of irrigation facilities, river development, conservation of water resources in reservoirs and traditional water bodies, rain water harvesting and artificial recharge of ground water. Government of India supplements the efforts of the State Governments in this regard by way of technical and financial assistance under various schemes and programmes.
