Question : COAL BASED THERMAL POWER PLANTS

(a) the details of the coal based power plants which are exclusively/partly using imported coal along with their PLF;

(b) the advantages of imported coal; and

(c) the per unit electricity cost generated by each plant using imported coal and domestic coal, separately?

Answer given by the minister

THE MINISTER OF STATE IN THE MINISTRY OF POWER ( SHRIMATI JAYAWANTI MEHTA )

(a): No coal based Thermal Power Station under Utility Sector is exclusively using imported coal. Import of coal is under OGL and, therefore, power stations importing coal are not necessarily furnishing the import details. During the current year five thermal power stations namely Dahanu (Maharashtra), Ropar (Punjab), AE Company (Gujarat), Ukai and Trombay

(Maharashtra) are reported to be importing coal for blending purposes. The PLF of these power stations for April-July 2000 is given below:

Thermal Power Station PLF(%)
1. Dahanu 80.8

2. Ropar 75.9

3. AE Company (Sabarmati) 87.3

4. Ukai 68.5

5. Trombay 79.5
(b): Imported coal is generally blended with indigenous coal in proportions varying between 10-30% for improving the calorific value and reducing ash percentage.

(c): Per unit electricity cost being generated by individual power station is not being monitored by CEA.
