Question : Bio-Digester Toilets

Will the Minister of URBAN DEVELOPMENT be pleased to state:

(a) whether the Government proposes to start ‘Bio-Digester Toilets’ under ‘Swachch Bharat Mission’ and if so, the details thereof;

(b) whether the Government has any plan to distribute this kind of technology to some industries to make it operational;

(c) if so, the details thereof; and

(d) the number of total operational Bio-Digester Toilets in the country?

THE MINISTER OF STATE IN THE MINISTRY OF URBAN DEVELOPMENT
(SHRI BABUL SUPRIYO)

(a): It is mandatory that all new Public and Community Toilets built under the Swachh Bharat Mission, must ensure safe disposal of human faeces either by connecting them to existing sewerage systems or by installing Bio-digester tank systems. Memorandum of Understanding (MoUs) between Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation and Defence Research & Development Organization (DRDO) and Ministry of Railway and DRDO for implementation of Bio-Digester toilets has been signed for promoting the use of this technology to provide the sanitation services.

(b to c): Bio-Digester Technology has been transferred to various industries of national and international repute to make it operational.

(d): More than 40,000 Bio-digesters are functional in Indian Railways and more than 2000 Bio-Digesters are in use in various Islands of Lakshadweep UT and many more are also established in various parts of the Country.
