Question : BARREN LAND IN COASTAL AREAS



(a) the total area of land in the coastal areas of Gujarat that has turned barren due to ingress of salty sea water during the last three years;

(b) whether the Government has allocated any funds to make the said barren land cultivable during the last three years; and

(c) the total area of barren land made cultivable during each of the last three years?

(a): As per assessment of Gujarat State Irrigation Department about 15.58 lakh ha. land is affected by salinity in the coastal areas of the State. Year wise assessment of the areas that have turned barren is not maintained.

(b) & (c): Yes, Madam. An amount of Rs.13635.38 lakh has been allocated by the Government of Gujarat and an area of 72259.82 ha. has been made cultivable during last three years (2006-09). Year wise break-up is given below:
