Question : LICENSING FOR SUGAR MILLS



(a) whether the Government has banned the issuance of licences for new sugar mills in some States including Maharashtra;

(b) if so, the details thereof and the reasons therefor;

(c) whether the Government has received any representations for the removal of the ban; and

(d) if so, the details thereof and reaction of the Government thereto?

(a) & (b): The Government has delicensed the sugar industry vide Press Note dated 31.08.1998 and the entrepreneurs are now free to set up sugar mills in any part of the country subject to maintaining the distance of 15 Kms from an existing as well new sugar mill and fulfilling the conditions as laid down in the Sugarcane (Control) (Amendment) Order, 2006. Therefore, the question of banning issuing of license for new sugar mills does not arise.

(c) & (d): Do not arise.
