Question : NATIONAL URBAN POLICY



(a) whether the Government are formulating the National Urban Policy;

(b) if so, the time by which the proposed policy would be finalized;

(c) whether the policy would identify the thrust areas and address various urban problems such as infrastructural deficiencies, poverty etc.; and

(d) if so, the details thereof?

(a): The Government is in the process of finalization of a National Urban Policy.

(b): No time frame can be indicated for finalization of the Policy.

(c)&(d): Yes, Sir. The National Urban Policy proposes to identify the thrust areas such as Urban Regional Planning; Urban Land; Urban Governance and Management Financing of Urban Development; Urban Poverty; Urban Environment; Urban Conservation and Heritage; Information System and Capacity Building.

It proposes to address problems relating to Urban Infrastructural deficiencies by giving special emphasis to Housing sector, Water Supply & Sanitation, Municipal Solid Waste Management and Urban Transport. It also proposes to reduce urban poverty by increasing investment in poverty alleviation programmes, development of employment generation strategy and by trying to integrate poor communities into city planning by improving access to services and land rights.
