Question : FUNDS FOR RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT



(a) The funds allocated to Universities and IITs towards research and development each year during the last five years, University & IIT-wise ;

(b) The number of research scholars produced by universities and elite educational institutions and engaged in different fields of research each year during the last five years ;

(c)Whether the Government proposes a new policy direction to institutions of higher learning and provide higher allocation of funds for research related work on science and technology; and

(d) If so, the details thereof ?

(a) : According to the information furnished by the University Grants Commission (UGC), a Statement showing grants paid by the UGC to Universities for the development of higher education and research during the last five years (University wise-State-wise) is attached as Annexure-I.The funds released to IITs under the scheme of R&D during the last five years is attached as Annexure-II.

(b) : No centralized database is being maintained in respect of all the educational institutions in the country.However, according to the information furnished by the UGC,the Faculty-wise number of Doctorate degrees awarded by Indian universities during the period 2000-2001 to 2004-2005 is at Annexure-III.

(c)&(d) : Yes, Sir. The UGC is providing allocation of funds for strengthening of research and the allocation for the last five years are as follows:-
