The proposal recommending Manipal Academy of Higher Education Trust (MAHET), Manipal for setting up NRI/PIO University was not pursued because of various legal and administrative reasons. There was a proposal to set up NRI/PIO University in the country through an Act of Parliament. However, in the meantime the Ministry of Human Resources Development drafted a Universities of Research and Innovation Bill. The Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs then took up the matter of setting up the proposed university under the Universities of Research and Innovation Bill once it is enacted. However, the above Bill has not been passed by the Parliament.
