Question : SATELLITE COMMUNICATION POLICY



(a) whether the Government are aware that the Satellite Communication Policy of the Government contemplates, as a promotional measure for the Indian Space industry ;

(b) if so, the details thereof; (

(c) whether the prevailing US sanctions stand against sale of US-built satellites or other satellites having US-built satellite parts to any entity in India;

(d) whether any American Company has applied to the Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) to make an investment in setting up a subsidiary in India on its foreign registered US-built satellites;

(e) if so, the details thereof; and

(f) the preventive measures taken by the Government in this regard?

(a)&(b) Yes, Sir. The Satellite Communication Policy of the Government contemplates orderly growth of Satellite Communications activities in India with increased private sector participation. It also allows INSAT capacity to be leased to non- government private sector service providers. Further, private Indian Companies are allowed to establish and operate Indian Satellite Systems. Foreign satellites will be allowed only if similar capacity and capability does not exist on Indian Satellite Systems.


(c) Yes, Sir.

(d)&(e) PanAmSat India Inc. has applied to FIPB for setting up a subsidiary in India to market its services.

(f) Does not arise.
