Question : Setting up of CRPF Camp in Assam

(a) the details and the number of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) Camp set up at disputed areas in Assam;

(b) whether the Government is aware about the disputed areas of Kosurtal Hailakandi and Rangpur Karimganj District;

(c) if so, the details thereof and if not, the reasons therefor;

(d) whether the Government is planning to set up CRPF Camps at these disputed areas within Assam;

(e) if so, the details thereof and the time by which these camps are likely to be set up; and

(f) if not, the reasons therefor?

(a) Presently, six companies of CRPF are deployed as a neutral force in the inter-state border areas between Assam and Mizoram and twelve companies of CRPF are deployed in the inter-state border areas between Assam and Nagaland.

(b) & (c) Government of Assam has reported incidents of encroachment in Kachurthal area of Hailakandi and Rangpur area of Karimganj districts on the inter- state border between Assam and Mizoram by some Mizo persons. Approximately 150 hectares in Kachurthal and 7.58 hectares in Singla reserve forest at Rangpur are adversely affected by attempts of encroachment.

(d) to (f) ‘Police’ and ‘Public order’ are State subjects under the Seventh Schedule to the Constitution of India and therefore, the state governments are primarily responsible for maintaining the law & order situation in the State. The Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) are made available to the state governments on their request, to assist them in maintaining public order.
