Question : COMMONWEALTH GAMES, 2010



(a) whether the Government has given directions/instructions to Indian Olympic Association about its responsibilities in organising Comonwealth Games, 2010;

(b) if so, the details thereof;

(c) whether there is any controversy with the Indian Olympic Association about the constitution of committees for Commonwealth Games as mentioned in Dainik Jagaran dated January 20, 2005; and

(d) if so, the time by which the decision is likely to be taken in this regard?

STATEMENT REFERRED TO IN REPLY TO PARTS (a) to (d) OF THE LOK SABHA STARRED QUESTION NO.6 FOR ANSWER ON 1.3.2005 REGARDING COMMONWEALTH GAMES, 2010 ASKED BY SHRIMATI SUMITRA MAHAJAN AND SHRI Y.G. MAHAJAN

(a) Yes, Sir.

(b) The Government of India has constituted a Core Group of Ministers (GOM) for coordinating the work relating to organization of the Commonwealth Games, 2010. In this regard, the GOM has decided to set up the following organizational structure:-

i)	Apex Committee under the Chairmanship of Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports for	overseeing and coordinating the Games.	ii)	Organizing Committee under the Chairmanship of President, IOA for conduct of the Games.	iii)	A three-member Sub-Committee of the GOM headed by the Union Finance Minister to supervise and	deal with all financial matters.
In addition, the following arrangements have been approved.
(a) The Lt. Governor of Delhi will have the overall responsibility regarding the Games with specific reference to security, law and order and matters coming under DDA. (b) There will be a Sub-Committee headed by CM of Delhi which will look after all other issues that come under the jurisdiction of the Government of NCT of Delhi, as per the Constitution. (c) A Committee of Secretaries (COS) headed by the Cabinet Secretary will be responsible for the implementation of the decisions of the GOM regarding the Commonwealth Games. The sports Department, through its Secretary, will service this Committee.



(c) There have been discussions on various related issues but there is no controversy as such.

(d) The decisions have already been taken by GOM on 29th January, 2005.
