Question : Exchange of Nuclear Installations

Will the Minister of EXTERNAL AFFAIRS be pleased to state:

(a) whether India and Pakistan have recently exchanged the list of their nuclear installations and facilities under the Agreement on the Prohibition of Attack against Nuclear installations;

(b) if so, the details thereof; and

(c) the purpose behind exchanging the said list?

THE MINISTER OF STATE IN THE MINISTRY OF EXTERNAL AFFAIRS

(a) to (c) For the twenty fifth consecutive year, India and Pakistan, on 1 January 2016, through diplomatic channels, simultaneously at New Delhi and Islamabad, exchanged lists of nuclear installations and facilities covered under the Agreement on the Prohibition of Attack against Nuclear installations and facilities between India and Pakistan.

The Agreement was signed on 31 December 1988 and entered into force on 27 January 1991. Under the Agreement, the two countries are to inform each other, on January 1 of every calendar year, of the nuclear installations and facilities to be covered under the Agreement. The Agreement is an important confidence building measure between India and Pakistan aimed at avoiding attack against each other’s nuclear installations included in the lists exchanged.
