Question : Ban on Diesel Cars

(a) whether a ban has been imposed on sale of diesel cars in Delhi and NCR to check the rising pollution and if so, the details thereof and the impact of ban on car industry;
(b) whether the auto manufacturers/ dealers have sought time to clear stocks and if so, the details thereof and the reaction of the Government thereto;
(c) whether the Government has assessed the impact of the said ban on investment in the country; (d) if so, the details thereof and the corrective steps proposed in this regard; and
(e) whether the Government proposes to extend the said ban to other cities facing the problems of air pollution and introduce only CNG vehicles including NCT of Delhi and if so, the details thereof?

(a): No Madam. There is no ban on sale of diesel cars in Delhi and NCR. However, Hon’ble Supreme Court vide its order dated 16.12.2015 passed in the case of M. C. Mehta V/S Union of India has directed that the registration of SUVs and private cars of the capacity of 2000 CC and using above diesel fuel shall stand banned in the NCR up to 31st March 2016. Implementation of the said order is to be carried out by the State Governments/Union territories Administrations.

(b): Department of Heavy Industry, Ministry of Heavy Industries & Public Enterprises have not received any such proposal from the auto manufacturers/dealers.

(c) & (d): No Madam. It is too soon to understand its impact on the said ban on investment in the country.

(e): No madam.
