THE MINISTER OF STATE IN THE MINISTRY OF WATER RESOURCES (SHRIMATI BIJOYA CHAKRAVARTY)
(a)&(b) The Central Ground Water Board (CGWB), under
the Ministry of Water Resources monitors ground
water quality throughout the country on regular
basis. The studies carried out by the CGWB
indicate that the ground water in major parts of
the country is by and large potable. There are,
however, areas which have poor quality of ground
water mainly due to the contamination from
industrial and domestic effluents, excessive use of
fertilizers, mining wastes, saline water ingress
and due to the nature of the ground water bearing
rock formations. The names of States and locations
where ground water has been found contaminated and
reasons thereof are given in enclosed Statement.
(c)&(d) As per observations made by the CGWB,
significant decline in the levels of ground water
have been observed in certain pockets in the States
of Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, NCT
of Delhi, Jharkhand, Gujarat, Haryana, Karnataka,
Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Orissa,
Punjab, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Tripura, Uttar
Pradesh and West Bengal.
Studies undertaken to monitor effects of the
artificial recharge schemes have shown positive impact
in terms of rise in ground water level and
sustainability of ground water structures in the areas
where such schemes have been implemented.
(e)&(f) The Government is encouraging rain water
harvesting activities through mass awareness and training
programmes by involving various Government and Non-
Government organisations. During 2003-04, the CGWB has a
programme to organise 51 training programmes and 51 mass
awareness programmes on rain water harvesting in the
country.
