Question : REVIVAL OF POTA



(a) whether the Government proposes to revive the POTA in view of increasing activities of terrorism in the country:

(b) if so, the details in this regard;

(c) whether the situation of terrorist activities has assessed after the withdrawal of the said law;

(d) if so, the details thereof; and

(e) the steps taken by the Government to deal with the terrorism?

(a): No, Sir.

(b): Does not arise.

(c) & (d): Alongside repeal of POTA in September, 2004, the Government amended the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967 and incorporated therein such provisions as are considered necessary to deal with various facets of terrorism.

(e): In order to curb terrorist activities of terrorist outfits, the Government has pursued a multi-pronged approach which includes, strengthening the border management to check infiltration, galvanizing the intelligence machinery, improved technology, weaponry and equipments for security forces both at the Centre and in the States, neutralizing plans of terrorist groups including LeT/anti-national elements/ISI agents by well coordinated intelligence based operations.

Besides, steps have also been taken to achieve bilateral and multilateral cooperation to deal with the menace of terrorism given its global dimensions.
