MINISTER OF STATE FOR DRINKING WATER AND SANITATION
(SHRI RAMESH CHANDAPPA JIGAJINAGI)

(a) Under National Rural Drinking Water Programme (NRDWP), the Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation provides financial and technical assistance to all States and UTs (Andaman & Nicobar) for drinking water supply in the rural areas of the country. Recently, under Water quality sub-mission of NRDWP, Government of India has also released funds of Rs. 814.14 Crore to 15 States (Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Haryana, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Odisha, Rajasthan, Telangana, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal) exclusively for addressing Arsenic and Fluoride contamination in drinking in rural areas of these States.
(b) Providing Drinking water is a continuous and dynamic process. The coverage status of habitations keeps on changing and fully covered habitations slip back to partially covered status due to various reasons including depletion in the ground water levels due to inconsistent rainfall & successive drought and over extraction of ground water, contamination in water sources. However, this Ministry is striving on full coverage of drinking water supply to more and more rural habitations on a continuous basis in the country. A Strategic Plan for the rural drinking water sector has been prepared for the period 2011-2022, which stresses on extending the piped water supply to more households in the rural areas. The interim goal till 2017 is to cover 50% of all rural households with piped water supply. By 2022, the goal is to cover 90% rural households with piped water supply. Moreover, this Ministry has accorded utmost priority for addressing the problem of Arsenic and Fluoride affected habitations in the country.
