Question : WIDENING OF ROADS UNDER PMGSY



(a) whether the Government has anyproposal to widen the roads constructedunder the Pradhan Mantri Gram SadakYojana (PMGSY) as a follow up of thestudy conducted on the increasing problemof traffic in rural areas;

(b) if so, the details thereof and the timeby which the said proposal is likely to beimplemented; and

(c) the number of roads proposed to becovered under the scheme, State-wise?

(a) to (c) The Government of India has launched on 1st May, 2013 Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana-II (PMGSY–II) which envisages consolidation of the existing Rural Road Network to improve its overall efficiency as a provider of transportation services for people, goods and services. PMGSY-II focuses on upgradation of existing selected rural roads based on their economic potential and their role in facilitating the growth of rural market centres and rural hubs. Under PMGSY-II, the States are required to undertake an independent traffic study of eligible rural roads under the District Rural Roads Plan (DRRP) in order to assess the traffic projection which enables the States to decide on the carriageway width of the eligible roads.Under PMGSY-II, a total road length of 50,000 Km has been approved for upgradation in the 12th Five Year Plan period. State-wise allocation of road length under PMGSY-II is given atAnnexure.
