Question : Suicide Cases

(a) the male and female ratio in regard to the persons who committed suicides during each of the last three years and the current year, State-wise;
(b) whether suicides among tribals are on the rise in the country;
(c) if so, the details thereof and the total number of such cases reported during the said period, State-wise;
(d) whether the Government has identified the causes/circumstances for such incidents, if so, the details and outcome thereof; and
(e) the measures taken by the Union and the State Governments to prevent the people from committing suicide?

(a): As per the data furnished by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), the State/UT wise and gender wise total number of persons who have committed suicides during 2012-2014 is enclosed at Annexure – I

(b) to (c): NCRB does not maintain the data on suicides among tribal population separately.

(d): Major causes of suicide, as per data available, are Family problems, Illness, drug abuse, Bankruptcy or sudden change in economic status etc. Cause wise details on suicides committed during 2012-2014 is enclosed at Annexure – II.

(e): ‘Public Health’ and ‘Public Order’ are the State subjects. However, the Government of India attaches highest importance in the matter and has approved implementation of the District Mental Health Programme in some of the districts of the country with added components of suicide prevention services, work place stress management, life skills training and counseling in schools and colleges.
