Question : NURSING SCHOOLS AND COLLEGES



(a) the number of diploma/degree schools and colleges and institutes imparting nursing education in the country indicating the number of seats therein, State/ UT-wise;

(b) the steps taken/proposed to be taken by the Government to open new nursing educational institutions in the country, location and State/UT-wise;

(c) the number of proposals from the States/UTs received by the Government for setting up/upgradation of nursing institutions along with the action taken/ proposed to be taken thereon during each of the last three years and the current year, State/UT-wise;

(d) whether a number of existing nursing diploma/degree schools and colleges are disfunctional in the country, if so, the details thereof and the reasons therefor along with the corrective steps being taken by the Government in this regard; and

(e) the measures taken/proposed to be taken by the Government to scale up the standards of nursing education in the country?

(a): The number of nursing schools and colleges in the country is at Annexure I.

(b) & (c): Under the Centrally Sponsored Scheme of Strengthening/Upgradation of Nursing Services (ANM/GNM), Government of India has, on the basis of proposals received from State Govts, approved 127 ANM and 137 GNM Schools in the country. Details are at Annexure-II.

(d): Institutions who have not admitted students in successive two years are considered disfunctional. The State/UT wise number of disfunctional schools and colleges in the country is at Annexure-III. However, these institutions can restart the programme within five years from the date the institute has become disfunctional. Institution can apply to Indian Nursing Council for which new guidelines and calendar of events will not be applicable.

(e): The Government of India has taken a number of steps to scale up the standards of nursing education in the country including revision of syllabus for various courses, development of Ph.D. (Nursing), Nursing Curriculum, establishment of national curriculum for Ph.D. (Nursing), development of quality assurance model, framing of syllabus for different speciality nursing programme etc. The norms for opening of nursing institutes and starting new courses have also been relaxed.
