Question : NCRB STUDY ON SUICIDE CASES



(a) the number of suicides committed by men and women in different age groups during each of the last three years, Statewise;

(b) whether the NCRB has conducted any nation-wide study regarding illegitimate pregnancy related suicides;

(c) if so, whether the NCRB has submitted the report;

(d) if so, the details thereof; and

(e) the steps taken by the Government to prevent the recurrence of such cases in future?

(a): As per information compiled by National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), the State/UT-wise and sex-wise number of suicides committed in different age groups during 2004 to 2006 are enclosed at Annexure-I to Annexure III respectively.

(b): NCRB has not conducted any study in this regard. The data compiled by NCRB in respect of suicides due to illegitimate pregnancy indicates that a total of 204, 171 and 267 suicides were committed due to illegitimate pregnancy in the country during the years 2004 to 2006 respectively.

(c) & (d): Does not arise.

(e): During the 11th Five Year Plan period, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, under its re-strategised National Mental Health Programme having a component of District Mental Health Programme, inter alia envisages to cater for suicide prevention.
