(a) the number of chemicals and fertilizer factories in the country and the
number out of them functioning at present ;
(b) whether the Government had invited the global tenders to run the
fertilizer factories in the country; and
(c) if so, the details thereof alongwith the reasons therefore?

(a) The manufacture of chemicals is deregulated, except for few hazardous
chemicals. There are two public sector undertakings viz. M/s. Hindustan organic
Chemicals Ltd. and M/s Hindustan Insecticides Ltd. who are engaged in the
manufacture of chemicals. The other chemical manufacturing units are in the
private sector and details of the same are not maintained by the Department of
Chemicals & Petrochemicals. There are total 56 major fertilizer factories in the
country producing Urea, DAP and different grades of complex fertilizers etc. Out
of these 45 factories are functioning at present and 11 are closed. In addition to
these major fertilizer factories, there are 80 SSP manufacturing factories .
