Question : PRODUCTION EXPORT OF TEA

(

(a) the average annual production, consumption and export of tea in the country;

(b) the total production, domestic consumption and export of tea during each of the last three years including this year till date and target fixed for next year, if any; (

(c) the gap between demand and production of tea in the country; (

(d) whether the export of tea has been declining year after year; (

(e) if so, the reasons, therefor; and (

(f) the foreign exchange earned from the export of tea and the loss of revenue, in terms of rupee, due to fall in export of tea during the last three years?

The targets fixed for production, domestic consumption and export of tea for the year 2002-03 are 927 Mn. kgs, 693 Mn. kgs and 234 Mn. kgs respectively.

(c) The gap between the demand and production of tea in the country was 8 Mn. Kgs during 1998-99, 70 Mn. Kgs during 1999-2000 and 27 Mn. Kgs during 2000-2001.

(d) to (f): No sir, export of tea from India in quantity terms has registered an increase during the year 2000-2001 to the extent of 3.88 Mn. Kgs. as compared to 1999-2000. During the first two months of the year 2001-2002 (April-May), export of tea has registered an increase by 2.12 Mn.Kgs in quantity terms and Rs. 31.66 crores in value terms over the corresponding period of previous financial year. However, there has been a decline in value terms to the extent of Rs 259.18 crores, during 1999-2000 and Rs 184.30 crores in 2000-01 over the previous years due to low unit price realization. Export of tea in quantity and value terms during the last three years was as follows:-
