Question : New Airport in Tamil Nadu

(a) whether the Government has any proposal to bring a new Airport in Tamil Nadu;

(b) if so, the details thereof;

(c) whether the Government will consider the requirement of airport for Karur in Tamil Nadu which is fourth largest textile exporter in the country; and

(d) if so, the details thereof?

(a)&(b): An airport company namely M/s. Taking off to the Future Pvt. Ltd. (TOFL) (previously M/s. KGS Developers Pvt. Ltd) had submitted an application for construction of airport at Chengelpet near Chennai in Tamil Nadu. However, the Ministry of Defence denied the site clearance for setting up of a Greenfield airport in Chengelpet citing that new airport would impose severe restrictions on the conduct of Indian Air Force (IAF) flying operations. The company has approached Government of India for reconsideration of the project.;

(c): No, Sir. Government of India has not received any proposal for new Greenfield airport at Karur in Tamil Nadu.;

(d): Does not arise.
